Interim Superintendent Tim Crider

Picture of Tim Crider.

The North Bend School District Board of Directors has appointed Tim Crider as Acting Superintendent. This decision will allow for a smooth transition into the new school year while keeping our focus on the priorities outlined in our new strategic plan.  This plan was built in partnership with our staff, students, and community members, and will remain our compass for moving forward.

Tim brings a deep knowledge of all levels of district operations and departments, ensuring that the work of our schools continues without disruption. He is dedicated to building trust and ensuring transparency, particularly around budgetary decisions, so that our community can feel confident that resources are being managed responsibly.

As Acting Superintendent, Tim is excited to continue working side by side with the Board of Directors, our educators, and our community to make North Bend schools the very best they can be. We are confident this will be a positive transition for our district, and under Tim’s leadership we will continue building on the work already in place, maintaining our commitment to academic excellence, student well-being, and community collaboration.

Wayfinder Family Engagement Opportunity- January 10th!

We have received incredible feedback from our Wayfinder presenters in how friendly, helpful, and participatory our staff has been at the previous events, and even more exciting is the feedback we are receiving from those in attendance.  Those who attend love it.  Wayfinder is a comprehensive K-12 future-ready skills curriculum designed to help students thrive in school and beyond, and completely aligns to our Strategic Plan.  These events provide engaging ways for students, families, and our staff to connect through interactive activities and games that nurture these important life skills.

COSA Law Conference

Earlier this month a team of administrators and myself attended the annual COSA Law Conference.  Day 1 for me was the New Superintendent’s Academy offered by COSA, where I have an opportunity to learn from state leaders and other highly experienced and successful superintendents on a variety of topics, which has already proven to be very helpful.  This was followed by the law conference itself, which provided a strong overview of current legal, policy, and operational issues affecting Oregon schools. Sessions covered RIF procedures, Title IX and IDEA intersections, updates related to labor relations, HR practices, and employee investigations. Presenters also addressed compliance areas such as special education, SB 141 accountability, parental rights, student and staff speech, and strategic budgeting. Overall, the training offered timely guidance to help districts stay compliant, strengthen leadership practices, and support safe and effective school operations.

Out of State Wrestling Opportunity

Our wrestling coaches will be taking our team to a two day tournament in Ridgefield, WA, which is not a tournament we have participated in, however we want to find ways to increase opportunities for students. Given it is out of state, we wanted to share this with you. This will be held on December 28th-31st

Athletic Study Hall

We have added a study hall for student-athletes Mondays-Wednesday from 3:15-3:45 in our HS library.  It is mandatory for any student that is receiving F grades, and optional for any other student-athlete that wants to come in.  We started it at the end of the fall season and are picking it back up now as we get into the winter season.  The idea is that students have a guaranteed place that is quiet so that they can finish any work that is missing so they can maintain eligibility to participate in sports.  In the future we hope to be able to expand it to have students be able to go to teachers for help, or have teachers come in and help. We are also seeking ways to expand such opportunities to all students.

Legislative Meet & Greet, January 6th, 4:00-6:00 PM

Representatives Boomer Wright and Court Boice, as well as Senators Dick Anderson and David Brock Smith will be attending. This is an excellent opportunity for our district leadership and school board members to connect with our legislative representatives and discuss education priorities.

Viking Lane Property Update

We are still waiting on a formal response to our counter offer to BPA on the 10.10 acres on Viking Lane.  There are a lot of technical issues our attorneys are working through, contract related.  Based on my conversations with BPA, the financial aspects of our counter seem to be good.  We have mutually agreed to extend the term of the offer to January 28, 2026.

Port Theater Update

We had submitted an official offer on the theater to allow us some time to make a decision.  The offer would be contingent upon inspections, the sale of the property on Viking Lane, and final Board approval.  I have received a counter offer but it is not something I would feel comfortable presenting to the board.  I am considering a response that is financially prudent and will make the acquisition fiscally justifiable to our School Board and the community we serve.

Reconfiguration

We are still exploring the possibility of an elementary school reconfiguration.  We continue to gather information, and have met with elementary teachers and classified staff in two different meetings, providing a presentation on the background of the discussion and the need to address enrollment and budgetary concerns by either reconfiguring or redistricting the current school boundaries.  As can be anticipated, these meetings come with mixed emotions, which will need to be considered, yet make the final decision based on facts and justifiable expectations.  A parent-community forum will be held Monday, December 15th, at 5:30 in the Hall of Champions.  This is not being held as a board meeting, however a quorum may be present.  Board members will not be discussing this together, nor making any decisions based on the event, but will be attending as community members.

We have also met with Mid-Columbia to discuss how this would affect busing routes, and they have proposed an estimate of costs associated with the reconfiguration.  We still have a lot of work to do in this area, and can refine these routes to better accommodate students and families but still lower costs.  It was important, however, to get some initial numbers to see if this is a feasible plan.  This information will be shared at the January Board Work Session.

Operational Levy Update

On November 19th, we held an operational levy meeting with certified and classified staff.  A presentation was provided so staff members could understand what a levy is and how it can support district operations.  This was followed by staff working together by grade spans to identify positions they feel are needed the most.  From this list, a survey was created for all staff to provide feedback and help prioritize the list.  From this, the certified union will work on writing some levy language that could potentially be used on the ballot in May.  Once some draft language is completed, my goal is to help refine the language and bring it to the board for a discussion and consideration of placing this on the May ballot.  I anticipate that being presented early February.  Following a board decision, the certified union would take over and work to build community support.

Tech Building Update

We continue work on updating our technology building to make it a usable, dedicated space for professional development and for school board meetings.  Furniture is expected to arrive the last week of December.  Once that is set up we can finalize our technology setup.  Based on this timeline, we are looking at opening it for use at the beginning of February.

QuestBridge National College Scholars

A North Bend High School student was awarded a QuestBridge National College Match Scholarship, one of the most prestigious scholarships in the country.  This award is valued at more than $325,000 over four years, and only 2,550 students nationwide receive it each year. No matter which partner college she ultimately selects, the scholarship covers all expenses, including tuition, housing, meals, travel, supplies, and other costs.  This is an extraordinary achievement and a point of pride for our district.  I want to give a special shout out to Rob Patrick, one of our NBHS counselors, who helped make this happen for this student!

Advanced Health

Sam Baugh from Advanced Health came to our last leadership team meeting and presented donations of $5,000 to each of our four schools dedicated to serving At-Risk students.  This is the 4th year in a row we have received these donations.  This is incredibly generous and greatly appreciated.  We have been able to serve many of our students in time of their greatest need using these funds.  Thank you Advanced Health!
