DISTRICT

Did you know...

From 1857 until 1900, the Simpson shipyard in North Bend built over 65 Tall Ships.  This was the largest fleet of sailing ships built from any one American shipyard.  These ships were noted for their sturdy construction using Port Orford cedar.  Simpson's Tall Ships ships lived an average of 35 years with almost none of them breaking apart or sinking at sea.  One of the Tall Ships built in 1874, the Western Shore, still holds a record for speed by sailing from the west coast of the United States to London in 97 days.

The first five mast and six mast ships were built in the North Bend Simpson shipyard.
