Feb. 15, 2006 - Middle School Technology
TEAM Goes To Portland |
| |
On February
9th, twelve Oregon Coast Technology students, traveled to
the Northwest Council for Computer Education Conference, in
Portland. This conference was a gathering of over 2000 teachers,
administrators, and technology coordinators, seeking innovative
practices in education. Twelve middle and high school students gave
a one-hour presentation entitled, “Tech Team In Action” to a packed
room of interested educators.
Most school
districts have a technology coordinator whose primary job is to
maintain and update hardware and software, as well as provide
support and education for teachers and staff. The Tech Team, formed
at the middle school last year, is comprised of 7th and 8th
grade students who fulfill the duties of a technology coordinator
for North Bend Middle School.

TEAM is an acronym, which stands for Training, Engaging in
Projects, Assisting In Instruction, and Maintaining and
Repairing Computers. Team members are trained to maintain
and upkeep computers and printers throughout the building, as
well as learning how to conduct themselves professionally in a
classroom or public setting. Because Tech Team requires so
much public speaking, students are taught how to introduce
themselves, and to explain the role of Tech Team to the general
public. In addition, students receive training to help
them work with peers and younger students when they assist a
teacher in a classroom setting or computer lab.

Tech Team
members often step into the role of a teacher, demonstrating or
teaching a lesson on how to use particular software. In
addition, teachers request Team members to take on
time-consuming technology projects such as creating
certificates, business cards, storyboards, PowerPoint’s,
newsletters, or simply designing a bulletin board. These
projects have literally freed teachers of hours of time.
The impact of Tech Team on North Bend Middle School has been
tremendous as students step in to provide technology support to
staff, teachers, and peers, providing a very positive
contribution to their school. |
